Behind the Mask
Dates with Jenna Kessler are often my favourite. Tonight we went to a place called Sky Dragon in Hamilton. It was a terrific musical experience, the concept is an absolute open forum of sound and self expression. Everyone is invited to participate so before we knew it Jenna and I were drawn into the circle of sound; contributing vocals and various procussion instruments to the mix. It was a unique cohesion of individual radience.
There was also a guy there who had a face mask on - the kind a doctor might wear. At first the sight of something like that on someone wearing mostly black and with black hair covering much of their face can be slightly alarming or written off as another anarchist punk kid. But I was really intrigued by it. At first I thought maybe he [actually for a while I thought it was a she...] was trying to make a statement - "the world is contaminated" "I am contaminated" - I don't know, some kind of rejection. Then I thought maybe he has a contagious illness that he is courteous enough not to share. As the night carried on and we all created music together I discovered some of his character through his musical expression. By the end of the night I really wanted to see the face hidden by this mask. It was highly intriguing. Of course I never saw his face but I did hear his voice when we said bye. I think in some strange way I was attracted to him despite the mask - perhaps it was just curiousity. It made me think of the various head coverings some women wear. I see how there is an attraction and intrigue to be found in them. It was a really great experience in general; I'm hoping to find something like this in London.
